Fragile Calm Returns To Malemo After Heavy Fighting

By Amina Kabasele3 min read

Malemo, August 21, 2026 - A fragile calm returned to Malemo in Bashali Mokoto after two days of heavy fighting, underscoring the volatility of front lines involving Wazalendo forces and AFC/M23 rebels.

The clashes on August 19 and 20 involved light and heavy weapons and left the town divided between the opposing forces. Two of four rebel positions were retaken, while both sides suffered casualties.

Residents fled toward Kalembe or into surrounding bush areas, fearing renewed hostilities. The displacement highlights persistent humanitarian pressure in eastern DRC and continued operational uncertainty around territory contested by armed groups.
