Fragile Calm After Clashes Between AFC/M23 Rebels and Wazalendo in Buhaya and Fungura
Walikale, February 23, 2026 - A relative calm has returned to the Buhaya and Fungura mountains, near Katobi in the Banakindi area of Walikale territory, following two days of intense fighting between AFC/M23 rebels and the Wazalendo.
The hostilities erupted despite a ceasefire proposed by Angola as part of regional efforts to curb persistent insecurity in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
The rebels launched simultaneous offensives on the strategic heights of Buhaya and Fungura, which overlook Katobi village and serve as key security positions for Pinga, a town frequently targeted by armed incursions.
After fierce exchanges of fire, the Wazalendo reportedly contained the rebel advance, forcing AFC/M23 fighters to retreat toward Mpety, considered their main stronghold in the area.
Many residents of Katobi fled into surrounding forests for safety. Despite the lull observed on Monday morning, the displaced population has yet to return, fearing a resumption of fighting.
The situation on the ground remains volatile, with local communities living in uncertainty amid a resurgence of armed violence in Walikale territory.
