Fighting Intensifies in South Kivu as AFC/M23 Reports Government Offensive

South Kivu, 7 April 2026 - The AFC/M23 has accused forces aligned with the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo of launching a series of major attacks across South Kivu province, escalating tensions in the conflict-hit eastern region. According to AFC/M23 spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka, the offensive began early on 7 April, with drone strikes reported in Mikenke and other densely populated areas of Minembwe commune. He alleged that the attacks resulted in civilian casualties, destruction of homes, and loss of livestock. Further clashes were reported in areas including Lumbishi, Katale, and Tushunguti in Kalehe territory. The group claims that these operations targeted civilian-populated zones, describing them as violations of international humanitarian law. The reported escalation follows recent remarks by President Félix Tshisekedi, who stated during a public event on 5 April that government forces would move to retake territories held by the AFC/M23. In response, the rebel coalition has called on both the Congolese population and the international community to take note of what it describes as ongoing abuses against civilians in the region. The AFC/M23, which controls significant areas in North and South Kivu, reiterated its position that it is prepared to continue its operations, stating that it would use all available means to pursue its objectives as fighting persists.
