Fighting Intensifies Across Eastern Fronts Despite Peace Roadmap

Bukavu, August 28, 2026 - Heavy fighting continued around the strategic village of Point Zero in South Kivu, underscoring the gap between diplomatic efforts and the military reality in eastern DRC.

The Congolese army, FARDC, backed by Wazalendo fighters, clashed with AFC/M23 forces in Mwenga territory. The Point Zero fighting formed part of wider eastern front activity that also included the Walungu and Masisi sectors.

In North Kivu's Walikale territory, government-aligned forces repelled an AFC/M23 push toward Mindjendje and Mpety. The offensive reflected the spillover of fighting from neighboring Masisi and Kalehe areas.

The continued combat, despite the Doha roadmap and related verification efforts around Minembwe, points to persistent implementation risks for any ceasefire framework. For investors, the eastern conflict remains a major constraint on logistics, mining operations and broader confidence in state authority outside Kinshasa.
