Fifteen Hostages Freed from ADF Captivity

FARDC-UPDF Operations, March 13, 2026 - The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) has announced the release of 15 hostages held by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

The civilians were freed during joint military operations conducted with the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF), part of an ongoing campaign launched in 2021 to dismantle ADF networks in North Kivu and Ituri provinces.

The former hostages were officially handed over on March 12 in Beni for social reintegration, marking another step in efforts to restore community stability in conflict-affected areas.

“We welcome this act of bravery by our security forces, alongside our UPDF partners,” said Lieutenant Marc Elongo, spokesperson for Operation Sokola 1. “These individuals were kidnapped by the enemy and held in captivity for four to eight months. Their return is a moment of relief for their communities.”

The FARDC called on local populations to avoid stigmatizing the former hostages, emphasizing that they were victims of abduction. Civil society groups also welcomed their return, praising the military for its continued efforts to rescue civilians.

These 15 individuals join hundreds of previously freed hostages, released during successive operations that have led to the recapture of key ADF strongholds and the neutralization of several fighters and commanders.

Despite these successes, the ADF remains a persistent security threat in eastern DRC, with continued attacks against civilians highlighting the need for sustained military pressure and regional cooperation.
