FDLR Re-enters Fighting in Eastern DRC Amid Renewed Clashes

Kalehe, South Kivu, 11 August 2026 - Fighting has intensified in parts of Kalehe Territory, South Kivu Province, involving AFC/M23 and forces aligned with the DRC government, including the FDLR, Burundian troops, Wazalendo armed groups and foreign fighters.

The clashes began in the early hours of 11 August in areas including Chambombo, Cyangugu, Kaziba de Rumbishi, Kwisimbi and Gafufura, with both sides reportedly using small arms and heavier weapons.

The renewed fighting comes after the FDLR signed an agreement with the DRC government aimed at disarmament and reintegration into civilian life. The latest clashes indicate that the group remains involved in armed activity in parts of eastern Congo despite the agreement.

AFC/M23 said civilians were among those affected, reporting deaths and injuries as well as destruction of property. Fighting also reportedly forced families to leave their homes and seek safety in other areas.

AFC/M23 spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka said the attacks had worsened an already difficult humanitarian situation and called for greater protection of civilians.

The latest clashes add to continuing instability in eastern DRC, where multiple armed groups and regional forces remain involved in fighting despite ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing hostilities.
