FARDC Tightens Rules on Smartphone Use at Front Lines Over Security Concerns

Kinshasa, July 10, 2026 - The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) have renewed their warning against the unauthorized use of smartphones in military operation zones, citing risks to troop security and the effectiveness of ongoing missions.

In a public awareness message issued on Thursday, July 9, FARDC acting spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mak Hazukay reminded soldiers deployed on front lines that careless use of mobile phones could expose sensitive operational information and compromise military positions.

According to the army, activated or improperly used smartphones can reveal the location of troops, facilitate enemy surveillance, and increase the risk of attacks against military units.

The FARDC command has instructed soldiers operating in conflict zones to avoid unauthorized phone use and to refrain from sharing information related to their positions, movements, missions, personnel, or operational images through social media platforms and messaging applications.

Military authorities also called on troops to strictly respect communication guidelines and report any suspicious activities or possible leaks that could threaten the security of operations.

The army emphasized that a single improperly used device could endanger an entire unit, urging soldiers to remain disciplined, discreet, and focused during missions.

The warning comes after several videos circulated online showing FARDC soldiers expressing concerns about their conditions on the front lines in the highlands of Fizi and Mwenga, South Kivu, where government forces are engaged in fighting against AFC/M23 elements.

Similar incidents have occurred in the past, including during previous phases of the conflict when front lines were closer to Goma. The circulation of military-related videos on social media has repeatedly prompted the FARDC command to remind troops about operational security and the importance of maintaining discipline during combat operations.
