FARDC Repels Mai-Mai Incursion in Nkonga, Mitwaba Territory

Kinshasa, March 22, 2026 - Mitwaba, Haut-Katanga March 20, 2026 - The FARDC (Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo) repelled a Mai-Mai Bakatanga incursion on March 19 in the village of Nkonga, about 35 kilometers from Mitwaba.

Gunfire was reported between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., as armed assailants briefly entered the area before being pushed back by the army. Local authorities described the attack as sudden and sporadic, with the situation now under control.

Officials confirmed that the FARDC regained full control of the village after routing the attackers, while provincial authorities reported a return to calm.

The incident highlights the persistent insecurity in Mitwaba territory, where Mai-Mai Bakatanga militias continue to carry out recurrent attacks against state forces. Recent violence has also targeted Upemba National Park, where at least five rangers were killed in similar incursions.

Despite military reinforcements, the security situation remains fragile, with key routes around Mitwaba becoming increasingly dangerous due to the presence of armed groups.
