FARDC Recaptures Mukole After Clashes with AFC/M23 Rebels
Walikale, March 10, 2026 - The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), backed by the Wazalendo militia, has regained control of the strategic position of Mukole, located in the Balindu area of Walikale Territory, following fierce fighting against AFC/M23 rebels.
The clashes, which took place on Monday, March 9, were part of a targeted offensive by government-aligned forces to reclaim the area, which had been under rebel occupation for several days. The operation resulted in the recapture of Mukole, marking another shift in the evolving security dynamics in North Kivu.
Following the confrontation, AFC/M23 fighters reportedly withdrew toward Ihula, a locality situated along the border between Walikale and Rutshuru Territory.
The fighting left several casualties, including at least three reported deaths among the rebels, with injuries recorded on both sides.
The violence also triggered civilian displacement, as residents fled into nearby bush areas to escape the hostilities. As of Tuesday morning, a fragile calm had returned to Mukole, although many inhabitants remain in temporary refuge, uncertain about their safety.
The recapture of Mukole provides FARDC and allied forces with a key strategic advantage, enabling them to monitor surrounding areas, including Ihula and Kalonge in Walikale, as well as Kalembe in neighboring Masisi Territory-areas that remain under AFC/M23 control.
