FARDC Launches Offensive Against AFC/M23 Positions in Fizi, Mwenga and Uvira Highlands
Bukavu, July 7, 2026 - Fighting has intensified in the highlands of Fizi, Mwenga, and Uvira territories in South Kivu province, where the Congolese army, supported by Wazalendo fighters, has launched operations aimed at regaining positions taken by AFC/M23 forces. The clashes, which began on July 1, have affected several villages in the highland areas, a remote region where limited communication networks have made it difficult to obtain immediate and independent information from the ground. According to military authorities, AFC/M23 elements, operating alongside allied armed groups, had recently seized several strategic positions around Minembwe, including Point Zero and Rugezi. In response, the FARDC announced the launch of a counteroffensive to recover territories lost during the previous fighting. Lieutenant Reagan Mbuyi Kalonji, spokesperson for Operation Sukola 2 South Kivu, said government forces had regained control of key positions, including Kimete, Wihene, and Kashamata. The military spokesperson added that AFC/M23-Twirwaneho-RDF-Red Tabara coalition elements had been forced to withdraw toward Rugezi and Bigaragara, areas located south of Minembwe. The fighting has also raised concerns over civilian casualties. The FARDC reported that AFC/M23 drones allegedly targeted populated areas, including Bidjaga village east of Point Zero, causing around ten deaths according to military statements. The situation remains uncertain in the highlands of South Kivu, where competing armed groups continue to fight for control of strategic locations. The renewed clashes are further increasing security risks for communities already affected by years of instability and displacement.
