FARDC Conducts Airstrike on AFC/M23 Position Near Mushaki
MASISI March 7, 2026 - An AFC/M23 rebel position in the Mushaki area of Masisi territory, North Kivu, was targeted by an airstrike attributed to the FARDC (Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo) on the morning of Saturday, March 7. Local sources reported that the strike focused on a rebel position situated on the farm of businessman and former national deputy Edouard Mwangachuchu, a site reportedly used as a logistical base for the rebels. The operation was carried out using a military drone, part of the Congolese army’s ongoing campaign against AFC/M23 positions. Residents heard a loud explosion followed by unusual activity near the target. While AFC/M23 political spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka claimed civilian casualties, local sources dispute this, noting no immediate confirmation of civilian injuries. The FARDC has not released an official statement regarding the strike. This airstrike occurs amid a volatile security situation in Masisi and wider North Kivu, where clashes between government forces and AFC/M23 rebels have persisted for months. Mushaki, strategically located on the axis linking Masisi to Goma, has repeatedly been a focus of military operations. Local populations continue to live under fear, with concern over further escalation and humanitarian consequences in an already conflict-affected area. Reports indicate ongoing troop movements from both sides near Mushaki, maintaining a tense atmosphere.
