FARDC Condemns Discriminatory Remarks, Suspends Spokesperson

Kinshasa, December 26, 2025 - The General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) clarified that discriminatory remarks targeting the Tutsi community, made last weekend by army spokesperson Major General Sylvain Epenge, “in no way reflect the official position of the country, nor that of the Supreme Commander of the FARDC, nor that of the government.”

In a statement consulted on Monday by Radio Okapi, the Chief of Staff of the FARDC condemned the remarks and reaffirmed the FARDC’s determination to defend and protect, with discipline and professionalism, the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country, as well as the security of all Congolese, without discrimination, even unto death.

The statement also called on the entire population to unite, stand together, and reject all hate speech in order to support the FARDC in carrying out their mission.

Major General Sylvain Epenge has been suspended from his duties following the controversial remarks, which have sparked numerous comments and strong reactions across the DRC.
