FARDC and Wazalendo Repel AFC/M23 Attack in Fungura
WALIKALE, March 3, 2026 - The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), supported by Wazalendo fighters, successfully repelled an attack by AFC/M23 rebels on Fungura Hill, overlooking Katobi in the Banakindi area of the Kisimba group, on Monday, March 2.
According to local traditional sources, the rebels launched their offensive from Mpety, targeting positions held by government forces. Fungura Hill is considered a strategic security stronghold for Pinga, a central town in this part of Walikale territory. Its capture could have provided a corridor to neighboring towns.
Heavy and light weapons fire was reported over several hours, spreading fear among the civilian population. However, the FARDC and Wazalendo forces contained the attack and forced the rebels to retreat to their original positions after failing to break through.
This incident highlights the ongoing volatility in North Kivu, where repeated clashes between AFC/M23 rebels and loyalist forces, often with local allies, continue to destabilize areas including Walikale, Masisi, and Rutshuru. Residents remain on high alert, fearing further hostilities in the coming days.
