ESA Puts Air Defense on Maximum Alert
Bamako, December 8, 2025 - The Alliance of Sahel States (ESA) has placed its air and anti-air defense on maximum alert, following instructions from the Heads of State.
Announced by General Assimi Goïta, President of the Confederation, the measure authorizes the neutralization of any aircraft violating ESA airspace, in line with the December 22, 2024 declaration.
The decision responds to a recent incursion by a Nigerian military aircraft and underscores ESA’s commitment to sovereign territorial security. While the alert strengthens deterrence and regional stability, analysts caution that it may heighten diplomatic tensions with neighboring countries and urge a careful balance between security measures and dialogue.
