Drone Strike Hits Fizi Hotel And Injures Civilians

By Amina Kabasele2 min read

Fizi, August 19, 2026 - A drone strike hit a hotel in Fizi Centre overnight, injuring two civilians and signaling a further escalation in the use of aerial weapons in South Kivu.

Two bombs struck the Mwalu hotel at around 1 a.m. on August 19 while civilians were inside. The hotel manager, Mwando Lukaba, was among the two people seriously injured, and the building sustained major material damage.

The FARDC Sukola 2 South Kivu command said TB2-type drones were used in the attack. The incident followed earlier drone-related attacks at Mushimbaki camp and Baraka airstrip in Fizi in late June.

The expanding use of drones in populated areas increases risks for civilians, humanitarian personnel and commercial movement along sensitive eastern DRC corridors.
