Drone Attack in Gao Sparks Conflicting Reports Between Azawad Front and Malian Forces

Gao, March 11, 2026 - The city of Gao witnessed a drone strike targeting the Gao military airport within the Firhoun Ag Alinsar camp, one of Mali’s major military installations, on Wednesday morning. The incident has generated conflicting accounts from the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) and Malian military sources.

According to the FLA, the attack involved 25 kamikaze drones, causing significant casualties and material losses among Malian troops and Africa Corps forces stationed at the base. Sources close to the group added that the drones were deployed in two waves, with 18 drones in the first wave to overwhelm the Russian TOR-M2K air defense system, which intercepted 12 drones. A second wave, supported by mortar fire, reportedly damaged a Bayraktar TB2 drone command post, a Sukhoi-24 aircraft hangar, and several helicopters. The FLA claimed that 95% of the operation’s objectives had been achieved.

In contrast, the Malian army stated that a terrorist group had attempted a drone and projectile attack against its forces but reported no casualties or significant material damage. The army said a patrol was deployed to pursue the attackers and that investigations were ongoing to assess any possible damage outside the camp.

Russian elements of the Africa Corps have not issued an official statement, though unofficial channels suggested that the attack had no significant impact, with no losses reported among Russian personnel or within the base.

The incident highlights ongoing tensions and the persistent threat posed by drone and improvised attacks in northern Mali, while the differing accounts underscore the challenge of verifying operational impacts in conflict zones.
