DRC: Government warns of influx of new refugees and calls for safe voluntary return

By Jean-Marc Okito2 min readFrançais

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Jacquemain Shabani, warned of the growing influx of refugees into the Democratic Republic of Congo, estimated at more than 88,000 people from South Sudan and the Central African Republic, during the 76th session of the UNHCR Executive Committee held from 6 to 10 October 2025 in Geneva. He called on the international community to step up its support in the face of this humanitarian pressure and stressed the need for the voluntary, organised and safe repatriation of Congolese refugees living in neighbouring countries.

According to him, this return will only be possible after an effective ceasefire, the restoration of state authority and the verification of the nationality of those wishing to return.
