DRC Forces Launch Major Strikes on AFC/M23-Held Areas in North Kivu

Kigali, October 29, 2025 - The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) army has launched a series of major attacks on territories controlled by the AFC/M23 coalition in North Kivu province, the rebel group said on October 28, 2025.

AFC/M23 spokesman Lawrence Kanyuka reported that the assaults began around 9:00 a.m., targeting locations including Kibati in Walikale, Bibwe, Nyabiondo, Bukombo in Masisi, and surrounding border areas. The attacks reportedly involved drones and long-range artillery.

“As a result of this indiscriminate provocation, children and women are being killed, and the number of injured and displaced is increasing at an alarming rate. By obstructing all peace steps taken by the international community, Kinshasa has made its intention clear: to wage war on the Congolese,” Kanyuka said.

The rebel spokesman emphasized that AFC/M23 would exercise its right to self-defense.

“Due to this murderous plan, the AFC/M23 has no other choice but to exercise its right to self-defense. We will use all possible means to protect civilians and destroy the criminals,” he added.

Meanwhile, the DRC army maintains that its operations are retaliatory. Army spokesman Maj. Gen. Sylvain Ekenge Bomusa told journalists that the strikes are a response to ongoing provocations.

“In the Church, they tell you that if someone slaps you on the left cheek, you will also slap the right cheek. We have not continued to watch the attacks all the time and with provocation,” he said.

The strikes come as the DRC government and AFC/M23 continue peace talks in Qatar, aimed at reaching a lasting resolution to the conflict. However, Benjamin Mbonimpa, Permanent Secretary of AFC/M23, warned that the renewed violence could disrupt the ongoing negotiations.

The conflict in eastern DRC has long been marked by cycles of armed clashes, civilian displacement, and humanitarian concerns, with international mediators closely monitoring the situation.
