DRC Army Clashes with Wazalendo Fighters in Maniema

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s army (FARDC) clashed with Wazalendo alliance fighters in Nyanga village, Punia Center, Maniema Province, on October 14, 2025, forcing residents to stay indoors for over an hour, local authorities said.

The Punia territorial commander, Ndarabu Abedi, reported that the fighting involved a Wazalendo faction led by a self-styled Colonel Serpent. “FARDC and Wazalendo often clash in Punia. Today, the situation escalated, and fighting broke out during the day,” he said.

Commander Ndarabu noted that similar confrontations occurred last month, resulting in multiple deaths at a roadblock set up by Wazalendo fighters.

Historically, clashes between FARDC and Wazalendo in Maniema are not new. In August 2024, fighters led by Amani Useni Josué, known as Saddam, attacked DRC forces in Kindu, leaving nine people dead.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as tensions persist between government forces and local armed groups in Punia and surrounding areas.
