DRC And Congo-Brazzaville Forces Clash On Congo River Border
Kinshasa, August 28, 2026 - Soldiers from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Congo-Brazzaville exchanged fire during a border operation on the Congo River, with both governments confirming deaths while investigations continued.
The clash occurred between Makotimpoko in Congo-Brazzaville and Yumbi in the DRC. Witnesses said Congo-Brazzaville troops on a routine river patrol encountered FARDC soldiers, after which shooting broke out. Neither side has publicly confirmed the exact death toll or the trigger for the confrontation.
DRC Foreign Minister Therese Kayikwamba called the incident devastating and urged restraint. Leaders in both capitals appealed for calm to avoid further escalation along a sensitive river frontier.
The episode matters for Rwanda because instability along Congo's external borders can complicate Great Lakes diplomacy and reinforce investor concerns over regional security spillovers from the DRC.
