Doha Peace Talks Between DRC and AFC/M23 Could Resume This Weekend
Doha, January 28, 2026 - Peace talks between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) government and the AFC/M23 coalition could resume this weekend, following a suspension since early December 2025 when AFC/M23 captured Uvira after a week of fighting in the Ruzizi Valley, South Kivu Province. The Qatari government, which is facilitating the talks, has invited both parties to a meeting to review the implementation of ceasefire agreements. While AFC/M23 has confirmed it will send a delegation, the DRC government initially did not. After AFC/M23 withdrew all its fighters from Uvira on January 17, 2026, Qatar has renewed efforts to bring the sides together. The rescheduled talks are planned for January 31 to February 1, 2026. The discussions are expected to focus on activating the body responsible for monitoring the ceasefire and identifying ways to rebuild trust between the DRC government and AFC/M23.
