Displaced Families Outside Camps Strain Sudan's Aid System

Omdurman, August 23, 2026 - Hundreds of displaced Sudanese families living outside official shelters are facing severe hardship, underscoring the scale of Sudan's humanitarian crisis beyond formal camp systems.

Families displaced from Al Jazirah, North Kordofan and other conflict-hit areas are renting rooms, staying with relatives or sheltering in unfinished buildings. Many have lost livelihoods and face high costs for food, transport, water, healthcare and education.

Women, pregnant mothers and female heads of households are among the most exposed. Access to maternal care has become difficult in areas where transport costs are prohibitive and only a limited number of health facilities remain operational.

United Nations figures indicate that 33.7 million people in Sudan require humanitarian assistance in 2026, including 21 million in urgent need of health services. The health system is under severe pressure from conflict, shortages and the loss of medical personnel.

For investors and policymakers, the crisis points to a prolonged recovery burden: weak public services, disrupted labour markets, school closures and unsafe returns to damaged urban areas will complicate stabilization and reconstruction even where front lines shift.
