Diapaga Under Pressure: Growing Concerns in Eastern Burkina Faso
Ouagadougou, November 23, 2025 - Tension remains high in Burkina Faso’s Eastern Region following the attack on the town of Diapaga on Saturday, November 22. According to multiple local sources, JNIM fighters briefly seized full control of the town, holding it until nightfall before withdrawing. Eyewitness accounts describe a large-scale coordinated assault and highlight a significant breakdown in the organization of defense and security forces during the incident.
At the same time, a Burkinabe army aircraft has been conducting continuous flights between Fada N'Gourma and the eastern part of the province over the past three days (November 21-23, 2025). Several sources report that this aircraft is being used frequently to repatriate the remains of security personnel killed in combat. The unusual intensity and frequency of these flights are raising serious concerns among residents and analysts alike: Could the army be experiencing heavier losses than officially acknowledged in this border zone?
These developments cap a week already marked by multiple security alerts across the east. Between recurring attacks, suspicious militant movements, and a climate of rising tension, the population continues to live in a state of persistent insecurity. Meanwhile, local and national authorities are increasingly expected to provide a more structured, coordinated, and effective response to the expanding threats facing the region.
