DCG Urges Police to Promote Rwandans’ Welfare During Nationwide Tree-Planting Campaign

Kigali, October 29, 2025 - The Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) for Administration and Personnel, DCG Jeanne Chantal Ujeneza, has reminded police officers that enhancing the welfare of Rwandans is a core part of their responsibilities. She made the remarks on Saturday, October 25, during a community service event in Ndera Sector, Gasabo District, where police joined other security agencies, local authorities, and residents in a tree-planting exercise.

The activity took place on Ubwiza bwa Gasogi hill, a site known for its vulnerability to landslides. Participants planted 20,859 trees and dug additional holes for more trees to be planted in the coming days. The initiative, themed “My Tree, My Heritage,” is part of a nationwide campaign expected to run for three months to combat erosion and preserve the environment.

Speaking to participants, DIGP Ujeneza emphasized that the Rwanda National Police (RNP) is tasked not only with protecting lives and property but also with promoting community welfare and supporting national development. “Gathering here for a tree-planting event highlights the importance of trees in providing fresh air and maintaining a clean, beautiful Rwanda,” she said.

She added that the planted trees must be cared for to ensure their growth and long-term benefits, encouraging local residents to take ownership of their protection. “When you plant trees, you leave a legacy for future generations,” DIGP Ujeneza said, linking environmental stewardship to cultural preservation.

The DIGP also urged participants to collaborate with security agencies in preventing crime by reporting suspicious activities and acting as vigilant community members. She encouraged youth to focus on education, work, and personal development, while avoiding violence, drugs, and domestic conflicts that could hinder their opportunities.

The nationwide tree-planting campaign began on September 12 and will officially conclude on December 31, 2025, forming part of the government’s broader strategy to protect the environment and enhance community development.
