Crime Rate Drops by 10.2% in 2025, Police Report Shows

Kampala, March 30, 2026 - The national crime rate declined by 10.2% in 2025, according to the latest annual police crime report, reflecting a broad reduction across multiple categories of offenses.

The report indicates that total reported cases fell from 218,715 in 2024 to 196,405 in 2025, signaling a significant improvement in overall public security.

Data from the report shows that assault cases dropped by 10.8%, decreasing from 29,580 in 2024 to 26,366 in 2025. Sexual offenses also registered a notable decline of 12.6%, falling from 14,425 to 12,606 cases. Similarly, domestic violence cases reduced by 12.2%, from 14,073 to 12,361.

Economic and corruption-related crimes recorded a 12.1% decrease, with reported cases falling from 13,132 to 11,548. Break-ins also declined, from 13,511 cases in 2024 to 11,818 in 2025, while incidents involving threats of violence showed a downward trend.

Police leadership attributed the overall decline to a combination of structural reforms and enhanced operational strategies within the force. Key measures included improvements in command and control systems, increased use of technology, and the expansion of community policing initiatives.

Authorities noted that the establishment of a clearer chain of command has streamlined decision-making processes, while stronger collaboration among security agencies has improved coordination and response capabilities.

The rollout of a sub-county policing model has also contributed to bringing services closer to communities, although officials indicated that implementation remains ongoing, with just over half of sub-counties currently covered.

In addition, investments in surveillance and investigative capacity-including expanded CCTV networks, canine units, forensic tools, and other technological resources-have strengthened law enforcement capabilities.

Police further credited sustained intelligence-led operations for enabling more proactive crime prevention and response.

Officials say the combined impact of these measures has played a central role in reducing crime levels, while efforts to expand coverage and reinforce systems are expected to continue.
