Coordinated Multi-City Offensive and Claims of Territorial Gains Across Mali

Bamako, April 25, 2026 - A series of coordinated attacks and offensives were reported across multiple cities in Mali and the broader Azawad area, marking one of the most extensive and simultaneous security escalations in recent years.

According to claims attributed to armed groups operating in coordination, including Azawad forces and the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), a multi-front operation was launched targeting strategic locations in Kidal, Gao, Sévaré, Mopti, and the outskirts of Bamako.

In Kidal, the group claimed that the city was fully recaptured following rapid fighting, ending a presence that had been established since November 2023. The former MINUSMA base was reportedly surrounded for several hours before foreign military personnel allegedly withdrew without resistance. These claims have not been independently verified.

In Sévaré, the situation was described as particularly intense, with reports of prolonged fighting that allegedly resulted in the takeover of the city and nearby military installations, along with the seizure of weapons and equipment.

In the Gao region, the same sources reported the capture of several strategic positions, including military installations and sites within and around the city. The attackers are said to have withdrawn afterward with military equipment.

In parallel, attacks were also reported in and around Bamako, including targeted operations near Sénou Airport, the Sirakoro area, and the city of Kati. These incidents were described as part of a broader escalation affecting both central and southern parts of the country.

Official confirmation from Malian authorities regarding territorial losses has not been provided, and the situation remains highly contested, with conflicting narratives emerging from different actors involved in the conflict.
