Clashes In South Kordofan Displace Civilians And Disrupt Aid Operations

Kauda, August 2, 2026 - Fighting between armed Otoro groups and Sudan People's Liberation Army forces triggered a new wave of displacement in Kauda, South Kordofan, sending civilians into nearby mountains and caves. The violence followed a dispute over border demarcation between the Shawaya and Otoro communities that escalated into armed confrontation earlier in the year.

The Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North said its operations target rebel elements who challenged its authority, not the Otoro community as a whole. Clashes were reported in Kudi, Al-Irsaliyya and Kajo, with heavy weapons used. Gunmen looted and vandalized humanitarian organization offices, burned dozens of homes and previously stormed Kauda central prison, freeing more than 100 prisoners, including military personnel.

Local government headquarters in Heiban were also burned. The unrest underscores the extent to which Sudan's war has fragmented authority beyond the main Sudanese army-Rapid Support Forces battlefield. Instability in South Kordofan threatens humanitarian access, local administration and any future security arrangements needed for postwar recovery.
