Clashes Erupt Between FARDC and AFC/M23 Rebels in Strategic Pinga Area
Kinshasa, January 24, 2026 - Buma, Walikale, DRC - Violent clashes erupted on Friday, January 23, between AFC/M23 rebels and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), supported by the Wazalendo militia, in Buma and the Ciprès Mountains, along the border between Baljnda and Banakindi in the Pinga region of Walikale territory, North Kivu.
Fighting reportedly began around 5:00 a.m., when rebel elements launched attacks on FARDC positions. The clashes occurred along the road linking Balinda and Banakindi, in the Kisimba region, a strategic mountainous area overlooking Munsanga, considered a key security stronghold for Pinga.
Heavy and light weapons fire reverberated for hours, sending residents fleeing into nearby forests in fear for their safety. Many villagers from Munsanga, Buma, and surrounding communities remain displaced as a result of the attacks.
By midday, military authorities had not released official figures on casualties or material damage. However, local sources indicate that the FARDC mounted a resolute defense, attempting to contain the rebels’ advance and protect Pinga, an important administrative and humanitarian center in the region.
These clashes come amid a fragile security situation in Walikale, characterized by repeated armed attacks, population displacement, and a worsening humanitarian crisis. Civil society groups in the region have urged the government and loyalist forces to reinforce security measures to prevent the fall of Pinga, which could have serious consequences for thousands of civilians already living in precarious conditions.
