Clashes Between AFC/M23 and Wazalendo Reported in Masisi

Masisi, April 10, 2026 - Heavy fighting erupted early Friday between AFC/M23 rebels and Wazalendo fighters in the localities of Mahanga and Kilongo, in Masisi territory, heightening tensions in a region already affected by recurrent violence.

According to local sources, the clashes began around 5:00 a.m., with sustained exchanges of heavy and light weapons fire reported for several hours. The violence triggered panic among civilians in nearby villages.

The fighting took place in the Osso Banyungu sector, a strategic area near Buhimba on the border between Masisi and Walikale territories. The zone is frequently the scene of armed confrontations due to its importance for territorial control.

Sources indicate that Wazalendo fighters launched an offensive aimed at retaking positions held by AFC/M23 elements in Mahanga and Kilongo.

The situation remains volatile, with ongoing insecurity prompting some residents to flee toward safer areas as fears of further escalation persist.
