Burundi Transfers Congolese Refugees to Ruhigi Camp

Bujumbura, January 5, 2026 - The Burundian government has begun transferring thousands of Congolese refugees from the Rumonge and Gatumba camps to the Ruhigi refugee camp, located about 60 kilometers north of Bujumbura, according to humanitarian sources.

The displaced Congolese, who fled fighting involving the AFC/M23 in South Kivu, had been living in extremely precarious conditions in the Rumonge and Gatumba camps, where they reportedly survived without sufficient humanitarian assistance.

Authorities said the relocation aims to move the refugees away from the Congolese border, citing security and logistical considerations.

However, conditions at the Ruhigi camp have also drawn concern. Refugees report facing harsh weather conditions and ongoing hardships, raising fears that the humanitarian situation may remain critical despite the transfer.

One refugee described the situation as difficult, underscoring the continued vulnerability of displaced Congolese populations seeking safety in neighboring Burundi.
