Burundi Deploys Military Veterans to South Kivu Amid AFC/M23 Advance
Uvira, December 14, 2025 - The Burundian government has deployed military veterans to the ongoing conflict in South Kivu Province, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. On December 6, 2025, veterans were transported in four trucks across the Nyamoma Bridge toward the Sange center in Uvira territory to support operations alongside Burundian, DRC, Wazalendo, and FDLR forces.
The veterans were reportedly well-equipped with weapons and ammunition, tasked with preventing the AFC/M23 coalition from advancing toward Uvira city. Additional Burundian troops had entered the DRC on December 3, establishing positions in Lubarika and Luvungi.
Observers note that the South Kivu conflict has depleted internal Burundian military camps, leaving only units of the Security Forces of the President (BSPI) and the Military Police to guard the Chief of Staff of the Army, Gen Prime Niyongabo.
Despite these efforts, AFC/M23 fighters have captured key areas, including Sange, Lubarika, Luvungi, Kiliba, and eventually Uvira city, forcing a mass withdrawal of Burundian forces after heavy losses, numerous injuries, and significant equipment seizures.
The Burundian high command has since ordered a strategic retreat, as the coalition continues to reorganize following the setbacks in South Kivu.
