Burhan Receives Defecting RSF Commander in Northern State

Dongola, April 19, 2026 - Sudan’s army chief and head of the Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has received a senior commander who defected from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), in what marks a significant development in the country’s ongoing conflict.

Major General Al-Nour Ahmed Adam, widely known as “Al-Qubba,” arrived in the northern city of Dongola after leaving RSF-controlled areas in North Darfur. His defection is considered one of the most notable since previous high-profile departures from the paramilitary group.

Al-Burhan, accompanied by senior military officials, formally welcomed the commander and his entourage. The move is seen as a symbolic and strategic gain for the Sudanese Armed Forces amid continued fighting with the RSF.

A founding member of the RSF, Al-Qubba played a key role in major battles, particularly in El Fasher. His departure is reportedly linked to internal disputes within the RSF leadership, including grievances over appointments and alleged marginalization.

According to military sources, the commander’s departure followed a tense standoff, during which he reportedly avoided arrest and led a convoy of fighters and vehicles through desert areas toward northern Sudan.

The operation was supported by Sudanese army units, which provided aerial cover and protection along the route. The convoy eventually reached northern territory under military escort before proceeding to Dongola.

The defection has drawn reactions from tribal and political actors. The Revolutionary Awakening Council, led by Musa Hilal, welcomed the move as a step toward national unity.

However, reports from Darfur suggest that the development has triggered reprisals, with allegations of abuses against communities perceived to have links to the defecting commander. These include raids, arrests, and looting in parts of North Darfur.

The episode underscores growing internal fractures within the RSF, even as the broader conflict continues to reshape alliances and dynamics on the ground.
