Bukavu-Uvira Road Reopens After Ten Months

South Kivu, DRC - December 17, 2025 - Road transport between Bukavu and Uvira resumed today after a ten-month suspension caused by clashes between AFC/M23 rebels and the FARDC in the Ruzizi Plain, including Luvungi, Katogota, Bwegera, and Sange.

The reopening of National Route 5 now allows travelers to complete the journey in four hours, avoiding the long detour through Burundi, Tanzania, and Rwanda that was necessary during the conflict.

The first bus, operated by El Shadai, arrived in Bukavu, carrying passengers eager to return after months of displacement. Witnesses reported that the journey was largely smooth, with only voter card checks at a few checkpoints, and the fare set at 300,000 FCF per person via Ngomu.
