Bukavu Erupts as March in Support of Uvira Turns Violent
Bukavu, December 14, 2025 - A large-scale march that began early this morning in Bukavu to show solidarity with the population of Uvira and oppose the withdrawal of AFC/M23 forces quickly degenerated into chaos, leaving residents in panic.
According to eyewitnesses, the march initially proceeded in an organized manner along the city streets. However, tensions escalated as gunfire erupted, causing demonstrators to scatter in fear. Preliminary reports indicate that the shots may have come from Wazalendo elements, who reportedly entered the city firing live ammunition and explosive projectiles.
Heavy shooting reportedly spread to multiple neighborhoods, including Panzi, where an explosive projectile struck a residential home. While human casualties have been reported, authorities have not yet provided official figures.
The march revealed sharp divisions within the population. Some participants openly opposed the AFC/M23, chanting hostile slogans, while others expressed support, calling for the movement to continue advancing toward Kinshasa. This polarization reflected the complex and fragmented local sentiment over the ongoing conflict in eastern DRC.
By late morning, Bukavu was largely paralyzed, with residents fleeing the streets and uncertainty prevailing over the security response. Observers warn that the situation remains extremely volatile, with a significant risk of further violence and unrest.
Authorities and humanitarian organizations have yet to release statements or deploy interventions, leaving the city on edge as the situation develops.
