Bobi Wine Emerges from Hiding, Announces Temporary Move Abroad

Kampala, March 14, 2026 - Ugandan opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, widely known as Bobi Wine, has announced that he has emerged from nearly two months in hiding and will temporarily leave the country for engagements abroad.

Kyagulanyi said he went into hiding on January 15, 2026, shortly after the conclusion of presidential and parliamentary elections, citing security concerns and alleged targeting by government forces.

He accused authorities of conducting raids, setting up checkpoints, and targeting his associates, claiming that his supporters helped shield him during that period. “They did not find me because the people of Uganda protected me,” he said.

The opposition leader, who contested under the National Unity Platform (NUP), has rejected the election results, which saw incumbent President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni declared the winner. Official figures from the Electoral Commission showed Museveni securing 71.65% of the vote, while Kyagulanyi received 24.72%.

Bobi Wine stated that his trip abroad is temporary and work-related, aimed at engaging with international partners and allies. “I will be speaking with our friends around the world before returning to Uganda to continue the fight for freedom and democracy,” he said.

His announcement comes amid ongoing political tensions in Uganda, with the opposition continuing to contest the credibility of the electoral process and raising concerns over political freedoms and security.
