Bishop Sikuli Condemns Rising ADF Killings

Butembo, June 9, 2026 - The Bishop of the Butembo-Beni Diocese, Paluku Sikuli, has voiced deep concern over worsening insecurity in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, condemning recurring massacres attributed to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) and criticizing what he described as political indifference to the suffering of civilians.

In a pastoral message issued from Butembo, the Catholic Church painted a grim picture of insecurity in the Beni, Lubero, and surrounding areas, where recent violence has reportedly claimed the lives of nearly 40 civilians and three police officers. The bishop warned that communities in the region are increasingly trapped between armed violence and growing instability.

According to Bishop Sikuli, the southern pastoral zone remains under the control of the M23 rebellion, while northern areas continue to suffer deadly attacks by ADF fighters. He said the persistent insecurity is not only costing lives but also crippling essential services and disrupting daily life for affected communities.

The bishop also criticized national political leaders, expressing concern that political priorities appear disconnected from the realities facing populations affected by violence. He urged authorities to focus on restoring peace and addressing urgent humanitarian and security needs rather than engaging in divisive political debates.

Bishop Sikuli called on President Félix Tshisekedi to prioritize peace and security across the country, stressing that governance should serve the protection and well-being of citizens. He also appealed to lawmakers to avoid political actions that ignore the hardships endured by civilians in conflict zones.

At the same time, he encouraged citizens to remain vigilant against political manipulation and urged security forces to reassess their operational approaches to better protect civilians and safeguard territorial integrity.

The bishop’s remarks follow a series of deadly attacks blamed on ADF rebels, including violence that killed 21 civilians in and around Beni, followed by another attack days later in Mbau that left at least 16 more civilians dead after earlier assaults in villages in Mambasa territory.
