Authorities Warn of Alleged Rwandan Military Camp in Kabare
Kabare, April 20, 2026 - The provincial government of South Kivu has raised concerns over reports of a Rwandan military presence in Kabare territory, warning of what it describes as a serious violation of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s sovereignty.
In a statement, provincial authorities said local residents had reported the establishment of a military camp in the village of Mumosho, an area currently under the control of AFC/M23 rebels. Officials allege that Rwandan soldiers recently entered the area and began setting up a base.
The provincial government described the development as a “grave attack” on the country’s territorial integrity and a violation of ongoing peace efforts aimed at stabilizing eastern DRC.
Authorities also warned of the risks posed to civilian populations, citing concerns over the militarization of inhabited areas and the potential consolidation of a foreign presence on Congolese soil.
The South Kivu administration called for the immediate halt to any construction linked to the reported camp and demanded the withdrawal of all foreign forces from the territory. It also urged the central government to take urgent measures to restore state authority in the affected areas.
Officials said they would continue to document alleged violations while working with national institutions to support efforts aimed at protecting civilians and preserving territorial integrity.
The province remains one of the main theaters of conflict in eastern DRC, where AFC/M23 rebels continue to operate across several territories despite previous withdrawals from key urban centers.
