Associated Press Investigation: Alleged Abuses by Russian African Corps in Mali

Mali, December 18, 2025 - A new Associated Press investigation reports that 34 Malian refugees have described summary executions, beheadings, and sexual violence allegedly committed by the Russian African Corps-successor to the Wagner Group-during operations conducted alongside the Malian army.

The report traces the evolution of the Russian presence in Mali since 2021. The African Corps, reportedly under the Russian Ministry of Defense, is estimated to deploy up to 2,000 fighters, largely former Wagner personnel. Malian authorities deny the deployment of mercenaries, claiming the individuals are Russian instructors.
