Army Says It Repelled RSF-Allied Push In Blue Nile

Ed Damazin, August 28, 2026 - Sudan's army said it repelled an attack on Fazughli in Blue Nile state, underscoring the widening southeastern front and the risk that fighting could threaten the regional capital, Ed Damazin.

Major General Ismail El Tayeb, commander of the army's 4th Infantry Division, visited frontline positions in Fazughli after the clashes and urged troops to maintain high alert. The town, historically known as the Kingdom of Fazughli, lies in a contested area where the army is fighting the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and an allied faction of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North led by Joseph Touka.

The anti-government alliance said it had captured two strategic army bases at Bakori and Surkum, southeast of Ed Damazin. The alliance had also claimed control of Kurmuk and Geissan near the Ethiopian border, as well as Amora, which hosts the army's 13th Infantry Brigade headquarters.

Satellite analysis showed a sharp buildup of combat vehicles and military supplies at an Ethiopian military base in Asosa between August 23 and August 28, including about 100 newly present light technical vehicles, armored personnel carriers, transport trailers and cargo trucks. The assembled fleet was assessed as capable of moving roughly 750 to 1,000 personnel, while Sudanese army sources have alleged that the RSF has been resupplied through Asosa airport.

For investors and aid operators, the Blue Nile escalation raises the risk of cross-border spillover, further disruption around the Ethiopia frontier and increased pressure on state institutions already strained by the national war.
