By Amina Kabasele3 min read

Kampala, August 28, 2026 - Uganda's military retirement exercise affected more than 1,800 personnel across ranks, marking a significant personnel transition within the armed forces.

The cohort included 19 general officers, 229 senior officers, 205 junior officers and 1,364 militants. The retirements covered formations and units across the country, from senior command levels down to privates.

Lt Gen Otema, reflecting on 47 years in the army, apologised to Ugandans and said he may have erred during active service.

The scale of the retirements is relevant to Uganda's security sector management, including command renewal, veterans' welfare obligations and the military's institutional stability.
