Armed Men Loot Teachers’ Salaries in Shabunda

February 18, 2026 - Shabunda, South Kivu, DRC - Armed assailants targeted a convoy transporting teachers’ salaries for multiple schools in the Shabunda 8 subdivision, specifically in the village of Mungole, on the Shabunda-Centre-Makese road, stealing funds and other valuables. Local civil society sources reported that the attack occurred about one kilometer from Shabunda Centre, with a school principal among the victims. Salaries for teachers at Kigulube Primary School, Un Point Primary School, Kamika Primary School, and Kiseku Primary School were taken, totaling approximately 13 million Congolese francs. In addition to teachers’ salaries, the assailants also seized money belonging to a businessman, as well as cell phones and personal belongings of other residents traveling with the convoy. The administrator of Shabunda territory, Raphaël Konga Konga, confirmed the incident and called on security services to apprehend the perpetrators and ensure they face justice. This robbery highlights the ongoing insecurity in South Kivu, disrupting the delivery of essential public services and threatening education in the region.
