Angola Proposes Ceasefire Starting February

Kinshasa, February 11, 2026 - The Republic of Angola has proposed a ceasefire between the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the M23 armed group, set to take effect at noon on February 18, the Angolan presidency announced Tuesday.

The proposal follows a high-level meeting in Luanda on Monday, attended by Angolan President João Lourenço, Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi, Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé, the African Union mediator, and former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, representing the AU-designated facilitators of the DRC peace process.

According to the announcement, the proposed ceasefire date is conditional upon a public declaration of acceptance by both parties. Angola also indicated that the start of the preparatory phase for the inter-Congolese dialogue, scheduled to be held in Luanda, will be announced at a later date.

The initiative underscores regional efforts to stabilize eastern DRC and curb ongoing hostilities involving the M23 rebellion.
