Analyst Warns Eastern Occupation Risks Becoming Entrenched

Kinshasa, August 1, 2026 - Congolese affairs analyst Christian Moleka warned that the occupation and fragmentation of territory in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo risk becoming entrenched rather than following the shorter rebellion cycles seen in previous conflicts.

Moleka said the current pattern of armed control, administrative substitution and demographic pressure in occupied areas could gradually erode state authority. He compared the risk with earlier episodes involving the CNDP in 2008-09 and M23 in 2012-13, arguing that the present crisis may prove more durable.

He warned that the longer the occupation persists, the harder it will be to restore governance, prepare credible electoral processes and reassert national sovereignty. The concern is that a prolonged vacuum could also encourage neighboring states to seek influence or intervene more directly.

The assessment underscores the strategic risk facing Kinshasa and investors exposed to eastern Congo: insecurity is no longer only a short-term military problem, but a governance and territorial-control challenge with regional implications.
