Ambassador Busingye Joins Britons in Honoring War Heroes

London, November 2, 2025 - Rwanda’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Ambassador Johnston Busingye, on Sunday, November 9, 2025, joined the people of Britain in commemorating those who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars and subsequent conflicts.

The solemn ceremony, held at Whitehall in London, brought together national leaders, diplomats, and citizens to pay tribute to the fallen. Among those in attendance were King Charles III, Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and members of the diplomatic corps, including Ambassador Busingye.

Similar remembrance services were also held across the United Kingdom - in Edinburgh, Belfast, and Cardiff - as part of the country’s annual Remembrance Sunday tradition. The commemoration included the laying of wreaths at the Cenotaph monument and a two-minute silence to honor the memory of soldiers who perished in both world wars and other military operations.

Around 10,000 former servicemen and women, including 20 veterans of World War II, took part in the ceremony, which was marked by a moving display of national pride and reflection.

The United Kingdom observes Remembrance Sunday each year on the second Sunday of November, in conjunction with Armistice Day on November 11 - the date marking the end of World War I in 1918. This year’s commemoration carried special significance, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer paid tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the armed forces, emphasizing their enduring legacy. “Today we remember the extraordinary sacrifices made by our military in the war and the conflicts that followed,” he said. “Their actions have helped us achieve the freedom we enjoy today.”

During both World Wars, Britain fought on the victorious side but paid a heavy price. The country lost an estimated 886,000 soldiers in World War I and 384,000 in World War II.

Ambassador Busingye’s participation underscores Rwanda’s solidarity with Commonwealth nations in honoring shared histories of service, sacrifice, and resilience.
