Alleged 1994 letter denying the Genocide against the Tutsi linked to Rusesabagina case

Kigali, April 3, 2026 - New claims have emerged regarding the contents of a letter reportedly found at the home of Paul Rusesabagina during the post-1994 period, which is alleged to contain narratives denying or distorting the Genocide against the Tutsi.

According to author Mukagasana Yolande, the letter-said to have been written in August 1994 by clergy who had fled to Goma and addressed to Pope John Paul II-contained statements attributing responsibility for the violence to political actors rather than acknowledging the genocide.

Mukagasana, who shared her account during a book presentation in Mageragere, said she discovered the document while visiting Rusesabagina’s home shortly after the end of the genocide. She later referenced the alleged contents in her published work, stating that it reflected harmful narratives about the 1994 events.

She also said the letter influenced her personal relationship with the household at the time.

The claims have not been independently verified.

Paul Rusesabagina, known internationally for his role during the 1994 genocide and later legal controversies in Rwanda, was convicted in 2021 on terrorism-related charges linked to the MRCD/FLN group. He was released in March 2023 after receiving a presidential pardon and later returned to the United States.

Rusesabagina has previously acknowledged writing a letter expressing remorse, but later disputed interpretations of its meaning in a 2024 interview.

The latest allegations add to ongoing historical and political disputes surrounding narratives of the 1994 genocide and related figures.
