AFC/M23 Warns DRC Forces and Wazalendo After Looting in Uvira

Uvira, January 24, 2026 - The AFC/M23 coalition has issued a warning to DRC government troops and Wazalendo rebels following widespread looting in the town of Uvira, saying any renewed attack will be met with defeat.

On January 17, 2026, AFC/M23 withdrew its remaining fighters from Uvira while awaiting the deployment of neutral forces to ensure civilian security.

However, on the morning of January 18, Wazalendo rebels, including fighters led by Gen. Ngomanzito, entered the town and announced their intention to continue fighting to remove AFC/M23 forces from all areas under their control.

Since then, Wazalendo fighters, alongside some residents, have reportedly been looting homes, particularly those belonging to the Banyamulenge community and their churches, seizing equipment and property. Some reportedly declared they did not want Rwandans in the town.

Later that afternoon, DRC special forces were seen entering Uvira, with some soldiers arriving on foot and others in Jeeps.

The government-appointed Governor of South Kivu, Jean-Jacques Purusi, indicated that he may soon return from exile in Burundi to resume his duties in Uvira.

The Permanent Secretary of AFC/M23, Benjamin Mbonimpa, warned that if DRC government forces attack AFC/M23 positions, they will be defeated.

Responding to the government spokesperson, Mbonimpa said: “Your troops are returning to Uvira. What will happen is that they will attack our positions. What will also happen is that they will be defeated. What will not happen is that the diplomatic support you have been receiving until today will continue.”

Following their withdrawal, AFC/M23 fighters moved toward areas including Kamanyola. The United States had requested that they relocate to positions within 75 kilometers of Uvira.
