AFC/M23 Seizes Control of Humura and Mukohwa After Heavy Fighting
Masisi, April 4, 2026 - Masisi, North Kivu March 30, 2026 - The towns of Humura and Mukohwa, located in the Nyamaboko 1 group in Masisi Territory in North Kivu Province, came under the control of AFC/M23 fighters on Sunday, March 29, following intense clashes with the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) and allied Wazalendo groups.
Fighting reportedly lasted throughout the day, with heavy exchanges forcing pro-government forces to withdraw and leave the two localities in rebel hands.
The advance is seen as part of a broader shift in control across parts of Masisi, increasing concerns over the security of surrounding areas and key positions.
Local sources indicate that the fall of nearby positions has also put the strategic area of Rutoboko under pressure, particularly due to its role as a logistical hub for government forces. The site is known for its use in military supply operations, including helicopter landings supporting frontline deployments.
A fragile calm was reported on Monday in Humura and Mukohwa, although the situation remains tense, with fears of renewed fighting.
The latest developments come amid ongoing instability in Masisi Territory, where control frequently shifts between FARDC, Wazalendo allies, and AFC/M23 forces. Civilians continue to bear the brunt of repeated clashes, facing displacement and worsening humanitarian conditions.
