AFC/M23 Says Burundian Forces “Learned a Lesson” in South Kivu Fighting
Kigali, December 9, 2025 - SOUTH KIVU - AFC/M23 spokesperson Lt Col Willy Ngoma has warned Burundian forces involved in fighting in eastern DR Congo that they have “learned a lesson,” following clashes in Kamanyola, Katogota, and Kiziba.
Ngoma accused Burundian troops of fighting alongside Congolese forces, Wazalendo militias, and the FDLR, and of firing artillery from Burundian territory. The AFC/M23 claims the shelling killed civilians and triggered mass displacement toward Rwanda and Bukavu.
On the night of December 4, AFC/M23 fighters launched counterattacks on Burundian army positions, killing and capturing several soldiers, including Lt Col Athanase Minani, a battalion commander.
Speaking to Mama Urwagasabo TV, Ngoma said Burundian reinforcements had crossed the border in recent days, warning that AFC/M23 would not tolerate what it called foreign aggression. He issued strong threats against Burundian troops entering Congolese territory.
Meanwhile, AFC/M23 continues to expand its control, having captured Rurambo, Lubarika, and, on December 6, the Luvungi center in Uvira territory.
