Goma, April 7, 2026 - The security situation remains tense in parts of North Kivu, where renewed movements by AFC/M23 rebels have been reported in Walikale and neighboring Masisi territories. Local sources indicate that since April 4, the group has reinforced its presence in several strategic areas, including Bukumbirwa and Ihula in Walikale territory, as well as Malemo in Masisi. These localities are considered sensitive zones due to their proximity to active conflict fronts and vulnerable civilian populations. The reported troop movements are said to be accompanied by logistical deployments, fueling concerns over possible preparations for new military operations in an area already affected by chronic insecurity. The latest developments come shortly after a reported withdrawal of rebel elements from some of these positions, suggesting a rapid reversal that has heightened uncertainty among residents. Civilian populations in the affected areas fear a renewed escalation of violence, as the region has frequently experienced clashes between armed groups, often resulting in casualties and large-scale displacement.
