AFC/M23 Rebels Reinforce Positions in Kashebere and Kibati

Walikale, North Kivu March 16, 2026 - The security situation in Walikale territory remains particularly worrying as AFC/M23 rebels have reinforced their positions in Kashebere and Kibati, both located in the Luberike group. Trucks carrying reinforcements of fighters and ammunition arrived in Kashebere on the night of March 15. Following their arrival, these forces moved toward Kibati to consolidate control over this strategic part of the territory. These movements come days after clashes between AFC/M23 rebels and the FARDC, supported by Wazalendo, in Mikumbi. Analysts warn that the reinforcements may signal preparations for new offensives, as tensions remain high in the region. Recent fighting has also disrupted traffic on the Mungazi-Kashebere road, a vital route for population movement and transport of goods. Local residents continue to live in fear of imminent clashes, amid ongoing civilian displacement and persistent instability in parts of North Kivu.
